Holy Cow!

Ohmiword! Y'all I think I am having a meltdown. John (my husband) and I have been soooooo stinkin' busy since it's our first Christmas together that I haven't gotten ANYTHING done! (Except my Weather Fun Unit which you should totally check out here and follow my store! I know there's not much there now, but I'm brainstorming.) But other than that, we have had 6 Christmases to go to, and the last one is just around the corner. I've had all of my family from Florida come to visit and who wants to to work when family is in town?? John has the flu right now and our house is a HOT MESS, so I've been trying to clean it up and not get sick but still take care of him at the same time. ANNNNDDD to top it all off, I left my notepad, with my brain written down all over it, at school! I hate it when I forget things. We drove almost an hour out of the way on our way to Mississippi to stop by and pick it up, but they had just waxed the floors and I couldn't go in. Maybe this is a sign that the good Lord just wants me to chill out...I'm not sure he knows that I don't handle that well haha. Whew! Maybe I just needed to vent for a second because I feel a little bit better now.

I truly hope you have all had a wonderful break! I can't wait to read about all the fun things y'all are doing when you get back in the classroom. I also hope you enjoy the fun things that will be coming out of our room as well. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU so much for all the sweet comments (yes I read EVERY SINGLE ONE), encouraging words, and amazing ideas that have helped me get halfway through my very first year of teaching. I couldn't have done it without all of y'all out there in the bloggy world!

AHHHH!!! :) I Have a TPT Store...With My First Product

Oh. My. Gosh! I never would have thought that I would have the brain power to accomplish this during my first year of teaching, but I spent several days creating a SUPER cute unit on Weather. (Well I think it's cute) I decided to cover weather during January hoping that we might have a snow day...and I'm really just a science nerd and I like weather. When I started looking around I didn't see hardly anything on weather other than some cute activities SOOOO I jumped at the chance to make my own unit based around the math and literacy stuff we'll be learning. ANYWAY! I'm just so super excited, so PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE check out my TPT store!

Oh! Incase your wondering, the weather unit has 15 fun and engaging activities including:
CVC/Nonsense Words
Number Sequencing
Pocket Chart Story
and a ton of other stuff!

Storytelling Festival and Christmas Fun

Whew! What a busy week, but I can't tell you how much fun my sweet babies had. The pictures below came from all of our special activities during last week of school before our 2 week Christmas break. I'm having to start with Friday and work my way back because my pictures loaded in reverse order for some reason. Drives me crazy! Anyway, Friday we had a storytelling festival throughout our entire school. We traveled to different stations throughout the day for alllll kinds of different activities. The kids got to make a paper plate ornament wreath, they watched Frosty the Snowman, listened to our librarian read "Gingerbread Friends" by Jan Brett, and they played "sneaky Santa" relay races with Coach in P.E. After all of that fun, our principal, Mrs. Penney read "The Night Before Christmas"and had Santa came early to visit all 400+ kinder kids at our school. He gave all of them a stuffed animal! You wouldn't believe the exciting looks on all of their faces.

On the Thursday before our break my class joined with Miss Chamblee's Kinder Friends in our pj's to watch the Polar Express. We gave them tickets that they had to keep up with, just like the movie AND we gave them some hot chocolate with a special treat. They only managed to spill 4 cups out of 34 so I think they did pretty good haha. At the end of the movie they got their very own jingle bell straight from the North Pole...well it was actually the freezer, but they don't have to know that :) They were all so excited that they believed in Santa so they could hear their bell. By the end of the day I was ready for them to stop believing, but they had soooo much fun that Thursday, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

This was truly my favorite part of the week. On Wednesday afternoon right before school let out, our reading coach pulled my intervention students like she normally does. She took them to her room and read a story. The next thing I know, one of them comes running in my room saying "Mrs. Holcomb! COME HERE!!!" So I grabbed my camera and ran! I knew it had to be something fun! Well I get into the library and she has them all sitting by the tree with a gift from Santa. We live in a very high poverty area, and you never truly know what your sweet little babies are going home to each night, and I worry about them all the time, but thanks to Santa I KNOW that they will all have a warm sweatshirt and a new toy to play with. I almost cried when they opened their packages and I saw their faces. I was and will probably always be my favorite first year teacher experience. So sweet!

My Very First Donors Choose Project

Hey Yall!  I have had LOTS of e-mails and comments asking if I sell the things that I post on my blog in a TPT store and the answer is no. I have however just created my very first project  on Donors Choose.  For those of you that don't know, DonorsChoose is a FREE site that you can register on and list items that you WANT/NEED for your classroom.  This site is absolutely AMAZING and I truly hope that I can get lots of wonderful materials for my kiddos! Being a teacher and trying to provide ALL the AMAZING things you want in your classroom can get very very expensive, but it's even harder as a first year teacher trying to fill up that room. You've all know, you've been there before :)  Many ask if you can buy units and centers from me but I would rather you donate to my DonorsChoose projects.  This way the money will go right back into my classroom and benefit my kinder babies.  I LOVE sharing my things with you and I am leaving the link below, so check it out if you are interested.  As you know making games and activities for your classroom is SUPER time consuming as well as e-mailing them out so THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for your generosity and all of the encouragement you've given me thus far. Please e-mail me ANY TIME if there's ever anything you'd like me to send you!

Gingerbread Week

Hey friends!

This week was packed full of gingerbread fun! Most of the "gingerness" was in our centers this week, and not so much during theme because we made an ornament every day this week. We did read some cute gingerbread stories though. I can't wait to post pics for next week! You'll get to see our super cute Christmas trees, pics from our lessons on Christmas around the world, AND our Polar Express PJ Parrrtaaaayyy. Anyway, check out some of this week's centers for math and literacy. The majority of these came from Julie Lee and Jamie Mayas (best mentor ever!) and a few from little ol' me.

Santa And His Reindeer

We are in school for 3 weeks during December, before we get out for the holidays, so this first week we talked and learned all there is to know about Santa Claus and his reindeer. We had some great centers this week that focused on middle and ending sounds in words to help all of us with stretching/sounding out those CVC words when we read. My kids are doing so great with this! I am going to have a good group of readers on my hands eventually and that makes me so happy because that was honestly one of my biggest fears as a first year teacher...could I really teach a kid to read?? Well now I know that I can. In our math centers we continued with one to one correspondence by counting cookies and reindeer, we did some more with patterns this week, and we even counted backwards on several occasions. They loved that! OH! We also made a Christmas tree with different sized pieces of construction paper. The kiddos had to put them in order from large to small in order for their tree to look right. They did such a good job!

During our theme time we really spent some time talking about Santa and his reindeer. We labeled them both, we TLC'd a Santa...we still need to add the cotton balls...and we made a cute reindeer to hang from our ceiling. All of these pics are in the previous post, except the labeling activities...coming soon (because I forgot :)) Next week we're moving on to Gingerbread! Fun Fun!!

It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas!!!

Oh My Gosh y'all....I. LOVE. CHRISTMAS!! It is my absolute favorite time of year (minus the cold weather), and I am so excited to share my LOVE for this special time of year with my kiddos and my BSLK family. I haven't been as "gung ho" as I normally would because I have been quite sick this week...I even missed our local Christmas parade :(, but I am ready to hit it hard this week! Take a look at the few decorations in our room so far. I tried to create a Who-ville feeling because I adore "How The Grinch Stole Christmas," and when I saw these trees at Hobby Lobby, I almost died! They are so precious! Soon our room will be FULL of Christmas, and I can not wait.
